19th-Century European Pastoral Landscape Oil Painting with Cattle, Signed Portelli, Gilt Frame
A decorative European pastoral landscape, signed “Portelli,” executed in oil on canvas.
The composition depicts a peaceful rural landscape with expansive meadows, groups of trees, and a small country house situated on gently rising ground. Grazing cattle and small figures animate the central part of the scene, while buildings with a distinctive slender church spire can be seen in the distance. A calm body of water completes the foreground.
The painting is executed in a restrained palette of greens, browns, and warm earth tones, transitioning into a light, softly illuminated sky. The small figures and animals bring life to the composition while preserving the tranquil and idyllic character of the scene.
The work bears a visible “Portelli” signature in the lower part of the composition. At present, the artist has not been conclusively identified; therefore, the painting is offered as a signed work without further attribution.
The painting is presented in a richly decorated gilt frame, embellished with floral and foliate ornamentation and raised decorative details at the corners. The frame forms an integral part of the work’s overall decorative character.
Dimensions including frame: H 47 × W 57 cm.
Condition
Good antique condition, consistent with age and use.
The painted surface shows natural signs of age and previous use. The gilt frame displays age-related wear, including areas of rubbing, surface cracking, minor losses and variations to the gilt finish, as visible in the photographs.
These characteristics are consistent with the age and decorative nature of the piece and contribute to its authentic antique appearance.
