A decorative pair of 18th-century German engravings depicting allegories of two seasons, Autumn (“Herbst”) and Winter (“Winter”), associated with the work of Martin Elias Ridinger (1730–1780) and Johann Jacob Ridinger (1735–1784), members of the celebrated Augsburg family of engravers.

Both compositions are presented within distinctive oval reserves and feature elaborate figural scenes enriched with numerous symbolic elements associated with their respective seasons.

Autumn (“Herbst”) is represented by an allegorical female figure accompanied by children and an abundance of natural produce, evoking the harvest season and its traditional associations with fertility and abundance. Winter (“Winter”) is depicted through a more intimate genre scene, with figures gathered within an interior setting.

The works are executed in mezzotint / manière noire with etching, a technique particularly suited to creating subtle tonal gradations, rich shadows and atmospheric contrasts.

Martin Elias and Johann Jacob Ridinger were sons of the celebrated German engraver Johann Elias Ridinger (1698–1767) and continued the family's artistic activity in Augsburg. Martin Elias was particularly associated with etching, while Johann Jacob became known for his work in mezzotint.

The pair was acquired from Dorotheum in Austria, providing documented provenance. The two works have been preserved together as a complementary pair and are presented in matching dark frames with subtle gilt detailing and light-colored mounts.

With their monochromatic palette, classical allegorical subject matter and elegant presentation, the engravings represent an attractive example of 18th-century German graphic art. They work particularly well as a pair and can complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition

Very good antique condition, consistent with age. Minor age-related discoloration and light staining or watermarks are visible, primarily around the margins and edges.

These age-related characteristics do not significantly detract from the overall legibility or decorative appearance of the works.
