Papier-Mâché -- historical overview:
Thanks to the improvements of the paper pulp production in the 19th-century England, a durable
material was obtained, which could be used not only for the manufacture of trays and boxes, but also (from the 30s of the 19th c.)
tables, chairs and other types of furniture, even beds. Such pieces of furniture in the Papier-Mâché technique were ornamented
in many ways: gilded, lined with pearl mass, bronzed, or painted in intensive colors on a shiny,
dark background.
This technique of furniture making and ornamentation suited sophisticated tastes of the people of the Victorian era.
The manufacture of such furniture was concentrated in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
THE AUTHENTICITY (period of origin, type of wood used in manufacturing) has been confirmed by an experienced expert in vintage and antique furniture.
