Neo-Renaissance Armoire, ca. 1850
A piece of furniture, circa 1850, that has been made in oaken wood.
The closet is two-door, placed on a cornice with a single drawer.
The cornice ends with a profiled, protruding cornice molding.
Presented armoire is supported on legs in the shape of flattened spheres.
The upper section of this closet is crowned with a wide, profiled, and prominent cornice,
which is placed on the supports with the depictions of townsfolk.
The door is flanked by fluted lesenes: divided in the middle
with a diamond-shaped ornament with a meeting stile. The stile has decorations matching those of the lesenes.
Furthermore, the door panels, along with the side walls of the armoire, are in carved framings
that close with an arch.
The inside of this piece of furniture is divided by two drawers, and two shallow drawers
under one of the shelves.
To continue, the armoire is in perfect condition. However, the painted-black legs
have some cavities of the paint.
Due to its size and the advanced frontage, resembling the architectural forms of the frontages of grand buildings, presented piece of furniture can be classified as a so-called armoire. Because of the size, closets as the one above were used to decorate spacious halls and other representative rooms. Moreover, armoires were upscale: targeted towards the customers from the circles of higher class, and aristocracy.
