Judaica -- A Yad with Amethyst, Circa 1812

Yad is a type of pointer used for reading the text of the Torah.

The end of a yad resembles a miniaturized human hand

with a sticking index finger.

The item is made entirely of silver with a small amethyst. It was made on the territory of Russia,

or the Russian Partition, circa 1812.

The date of production is incused on the item, next to the maker’s mark, and the silver hallmark

with the assay of 84 zołotniki.

84 zołotniki is a unit of weight that was used

in the Tsar Russia, which is equivalent to today’s 0.875 silver hallmark.

Weight: 47.680 grams.

Length: 29.5 cm.

Presented yad is in very good condition. The item is undamaged, covered in

patina. The surface of the item has small scratches in some places, and minimal

dents.

This is a unique, collector’s item.

Historical overview:

Yad is used for reading the Torah, and is an integral part of Jewish culture. The saint scrolls of Judaism cannot be touched with human hand. So to not get lost while reading the text, you should help yourself with a pointer as the one presented above. Moreover, yad makes easier to keep the Torah clean.
