Edwardian Secretaire Desk with a Hidden Story
An Edwardian secretaire desk circa 1920, made in mahogany wood.
Simple, neat piece of furniture with slightly bent legs. Moreover, it has a row of small drawers with tiltable fronts.
The furniture was used for storing office documents. Hence, its name.
A brass plate is placed on the crest of the furniture. It has a dedication from February 1923, informing
that this piece of furniture was given to Mr. Charles Main by his many friends from Galloway
for outstanding merits in public service.
This is not only a piece of furniture. It is also an interesting story. The person mentioned by name and last name on the plate is probably Charles Main. It is most likely the same Charles Thomas Main, born on the 16th of February 1856 in the USA, who was an outstanding engineer, mechanic and designer that worked in Manchester, the UK for many years. In addition to Main’s professional activity, he was also interested in social issues on municipal government and local authorities. Moreover, he held numerous public offices. Main was a member of a board of councilors, and a school board member.
The date of offering this piece of furniture falls just in February, which is the month of Charles Main’s birth. Another interesting fact is that a hand-written letter to a woman named Elisabeth was found during renovation of the furniture. As is apparent from the Main’s biography, his wife’s name was Elisabeth.
And so, in completely unexpected way, this historic piece of furniture reveals the story, and perhaps the mysteries, of one’s life.
