Dante’s Chair/Gondola Chair from the 19th c.
A Neo-Renaissance article of furniture from the end of the 19th c., made in oaken wood.
Its shape refers to the Italian type of seat that was popular
during the Renaissance period.
The legs are S-bent, and crossed with each other from both the front and the back.
The whole is finished at the top with rails and a backrest.
Furthermore, the backrest is carved, ornamented with a depiction of mascarones. The rails are finished with scrolls.
The seat of this gondola chair is wooden, semicircular, and composed
of wooden slats.
Presented chair is derived from a curule seat. Named Dante’s chair after a poet, Dante Aligieri by the 19th-century antiquaries. Dante used a similar chair himself. Other terms describing item’s shape: Petrarca chair, gondola chair, or Karla chair.
